Green Day Biography

Green Day started as one of the members of underground punk clubs in the state of California. As early as 14 years of age, Mike Dirnt, the bands bassist, and Billy Joe Armstrong, the bands vocalist and guitarist, came up with the band called 'Sweet Children'. In the year 1989, a drummer named Al Sobrante was added and the bands name changed into 'Green Day'. The groups first EP entitled 1000 hours was released in the same year (1989) and had a warm welcome in the punk scene, leading them into the arms of the local label: Lookout. The last quarter of the year was the time 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour,  their first album, was released, and within a few months of that release, Tre Cool replaced Green Days first drummer, Sobrante, and became a permanent member of the group.

The 90s marked Green Days cultivation of a cult following, which became larger and stronger when 1992. Kerplunk, their second album was introduced to the public. Because of the great receiving of underground party goers and clubbers, Green Day caught the attention of major record companies, and eventually signed a contract with Reprise.

In the spring of the year 1994, the trio released their major debut entitled Dookie, with its single: Longview supported by MTV, thus turning the album into a major hit. Basket Case, which was the second single of Green Days second album also made waves---in fact, it stayed on top of music charts in the United States for five whole weeks, specifically under the modern rock category.

When Green Day performed at Woodstock 94, Dookie sales increased, resulting to more than five million sales in the United States. In the International scene, Green Day was able to gain more than ten million sales from their Dookie album. The next year marked the release of the bands album called Imsoniac, which claimed the second spot in the U.S. charts and produced more than two million copies for Green Day. The trio also had a song included in Angus, with that particular song J.A.R. Hitting the number one spot in modern rock music charts.

Green Day, however, decided to take a break in 1996, wherein they spent their time relaxing and coming up with something new, resulting to their fifth album entitled Nimrod, released in 1997, but was not as successful as their previous records. It took another seven years for Green Day to come up with a chart-topper---in 2004, they released American Idiot which not only became the king of the charts, but also became a multi-platinum material as well as the best reviewed out of all the albums of the group. Green Day may be considered quite amazing because they were able to make 70s music a hit among the younger generation.
